Biography: Velvet Rose is the primary stage name of an exotic dancer who attained notability as one of the few successful black actress working in the porn industry in the early 2000s. Many incorrectly label her as black when in reality Velvet Rose is of a mixed heritage. This is partially due to the fact that Velvet Rose continually dyed her hair an extensive blonde dye in the past suggesting to some that it was a natural color going to the full roots. Velvet Rose no longer dyes her hair completely, preferring to only dye the front area of her hair leaving the back area her natural black color.
The woman who would become known as Velvet Rose credits her interest in the porn industry resulting from her school days while living abroad in Germany. It was while living in Germany that her then boyfriend introduced her to erotic dancing which she took a liking to. Her German boyfriend [Desta Terefe] suggested it, and after shooting an actual sex scene, she decided to pursue the matter further and adopted her stage name, Velvet Rose.
After four years living abroad, Velvet Rose decided to move back to the United States. She settled in Southern California in April of 2002, with the definite goal of becoming a successful American porn star as she was rejected for being too short for traditional runway modeling. She recorded her first U.S. sex scene one week after turning 22 years old.
After performing in a series of small production compilation shots, Velvet gained the attention of Heatwave. Heatwave offered Velvet a one (1) year long exclusive contract to work for them. Velvet accepted and became one of the first reliable "black" porn actresses for the main production companies i.e., "contract performer".
Unfortunately for Velvet, most of her starring Heatwave films were of a fetish and sci-fi fantasy theme, including "Wet Latex Dreams", "It's Cumming" (a sci-fi.com Tremors spoof with giant penis instead of giant worms) and "the Beast within" (a sex remake of "Beauty and the Beast") which limited her generic sex audience appeal.
Finding lackluster sales with their star, Heatwave decided not to renew her contract leaving her a free agent with far less money making options.
Velvet states that the problem was mutual to both of them and terminated the contract six month in. However, she was featured in a Heatwave film released in 2004 entitled "Wrecked 'Em" and "Sexual Healing" both listed as 2004 production films not merely released films. Thus either there was some reconciliation between Velvet and Heatwave or at least a work agreement was reached for previously unreleased material to be released after such a length of time.
Finding that her money making ability from the porn industry was on a decline, Velvet turned to doing compilation work. Her most successful film work after Heatwave was for Adam & Eve, one of the largest and most successful adult film production companies, who hired Velvet in 2003 for several of their story based costume films including "Rawhide" and "Quality Time" as one of the principle performers. While Adam & Eve did not offer Velvet a reliable contract for more work, Velvet gained a reliable following as she was also hired for Playboy Studios doing announcement work as Video jockey.
Seeing that she did have a talent for fetish starring work, Velvet turned to Internet BD work, doing mostly damsel in distress films and photographs for notable BDSM photographers including Paige White, Nick Manning and cybernet entertainment (now known as kink.com)
But for various reasons, Velvet did not gain the reliable work levels from the BD and fetish production houses. Finding gainful employment harder and harder to attain, Velvet Rose declared that she was leaving the adult industry completely to return to college and attain a degree in court reporting.
After an absence of two years, Velvet Rose decided to return to exotic dancing which she has stated as her true love.
At this time, she has said that she has no interest in returning to adult film production.
